Guyana is a beautiful, tropical country to explore, and its capital city has more than enough to offer the average tourist. For the nature lovers, a great first stop as soon as you exit Cheddi Jagan International Airport would be to check out Guyana Rainforest. The country’s rainforests are a huge part of the reason that Guyana is also known as the Caribbean’s “Garden” and there are a number of tours that you can take to explore the area.
If rainforests aren’t quite your thing but you still want a dose of greenery, then check out the National Park in Georgetown city centre. It is located on the northern coast and offers a quiet, peaceful retreat without the feeling of isolation that the rainforest can create. The grounds are well maintained and there is also the occasional concert to look forward to.
A short walk from the National Park, you can find the country’s Zoo. Guyana National Zoo is rather small, but the animals that inhabit it are well kept and the venue is still a great place to take the kids for a cheap little day out. The Zoo is also on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens, which are much larger, more varied, and very, very stunning.
Once you’re done with nature, why not have a cultural experience? The city centre houses the country’s main Catholic Church, St. George’s Cathedral. This tall, white, wooden structure is a definite must-see even if you’re not religious. At the very least you can take some great photos if you don’t fancy going inside.
Finally, what would a trip to Guyana be without checking out the cricket grounds? Cricket is the national sport of Guyana and the Providence Cricket Stadium is just a short walk south of the church. This humongous stadium was built to host Super Eight matches in the 2007 Cricket World Cup and holds up to 15,000 people. Now, it makes the ideal place to sit and watch a game in the Guyana sun.
