Departing Ogle airport, you’re just a short drive away from all the best attractions that Guyana has to offer. The first place that you’ll want to check out is the Botanical Gardens. This large, beautiful expanse of gardens is a very popular place to visit for both tourists and locals, and you’ll most likely see either a wedding or a proposal happen during your visit. If you’re an animal lover, then make sure to check out the National Zoo which is attached to the Botanical Gardens.
After all that walking around, you’ll probably be hungry. Why not stop by the Stabroek Market? Here, you can find all sorts of delicious local food as well as clothes, gadgets and more. The market is located on the waterfront and gives you good access to other popular tourist attractions, such as the local museums.
The National Museum of Guyana and the Walter Roth Museum are great cultural destinations. The former is centred on animals, and there are a large number of stuffed and skeletal creatures in large glass display cases. Downstairs, there is even a life-sized replica of the Giant Guyanese Sloth, which is equal parts interesting and terrifying. The creature has been extinct for hundreds of years and this replica will make you hope they never come back! The Walter Roth Museum is a museum of anthropology, and displays many different genuine and replica artefacts of the Amerindian people of Guyana. It also details the peoples’ history and gives an interesting insight into how the Guyanese culture was shaped. Both of the museums are free, so they’re well worth a visit.
Amongst the museums lies the National Library of Guyana. Here, you can sit and read in peace whilst exploring the vast collection of books on offer. There is also a children’s department, so why not bring the kids along? You can all be bookworms together.
